About the work
Boat Stool is built entirely from salvaged timber. The Queensland maple seat is carved into a concave form that holds the body, making use and sculpture inseparable. American Ash legs are joined with split tenons and splines, producing a clean structural connection. Black hard wax oil on the legs and a clear finish on the seat keep the object direct, compact and materially legible.
Origin & Transformation
Timber was salvaged from different warehouse sources and brought to the studio. The Queensland maple seat was carved by hand into the curved form. American Ash legs were constructed and attached using split tenons and splines. The entire work was finished with hard wax oil, black on the legs and clear on the seat. The work is fully functional and supports an average adult.
Care notes
Frame and seat (hard wax oil finish): wipe clean with a damp cloth, dry immediately. Do not use chemical cleaners or solvents. The hard wax oil finish can be resealed if the surface begins to look dull; use a compatible hard wax oil product in the same sheen and colour, or contact the artist before applying anything new.
Structural: the joints are structural split tenons and splines. Inspect periodically for any movement. The stool is functional and supports an average adult.
Environment: avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Maintain stable humidity; wood responds to significant humidity changes. Do not store near cooling or heating vents, bathrooms, or kitchens.
