About the work
Corrugated Jar begins with a storm-felled branch and a woodworking method that depends on timing. The vessel was hollowed while the timber was still green, fitted with a carved base, then left to contract as it dried. Aqua milk paint gives the form its colour, carrying a quiet association with water and the storm that brought the branch down. The separate lid was carved after drying, shaped to the settled opening and finished in wax.
Origin & Transformation
A branch was collected from a storm-felled tree and brought to the studio. While the wood was still green, it was hollowed by hand-chisel. A matching base was carved and fitted to seal the hollow before the branch dried, following the shrink pot method. Once dry, the exterior was hand-carved and the surface painted with natural milk paint in aqua and finished with varnish. The lid was carved last, shaped to fit the dried opening and finished with wax.
Care notes
Wood and finish: the vessel is sealed with milk paint and varnish, lid sealed with wax. Do not submerge in water or fill with liquid. This is a sculptural object that can be used for holding lightweight, dry and clean materials only. Wipe the exterior with a dampened cloth if needed, dry immediately. Do not use chemical cleaners or solvents. The wax finish on the lid can be reapplied lightly if the surface feels dry; use a natural beeswax or carnauba-based product and apply sparingly.
Light: avoid prolonged direct sunlight. Milk paint pigments can fade with extended UV exposure, and wood may check (develop small surface cracks) if it dries too rapidly in a bright window.
Environment: maintain reasonably stable humidity. Wood responds to humidity changes; do not store near a heater, air conditioning vent, or bathroom.
