About the work
Allsorts takes its palette and sequence from Liquorice Allsorts, translating the confection's stacked colour bands into frame, cushion and piping. The rocking chair's cube-like frame is treated with black, yellow and orange hard wax oil, while marine vinyl cushions hold the same colour scheme in a different surface. The work remains functional, but function is part of its sculptural force: a chair that rocks, remembers and refuses to recede.
Origin & Transformation
The rocking chair was found on a Sydney suburban street in need of a seat and minor repairs. It was a well-crafted cedar piece with more durable timber rocker rails. The frame was sanded and minor structural issues addressed before the seat base was reconstructed with webbing. The frame was then finished with pigmented hard wax oil in black, yellow and orange horizontal stripes. Vibrant seat cushions were sewn from black, yellow and orange marine vinyl, and constructed with upholstery foam and padding.
Care notes
Frame (pigmented hard wax oil): wipe clean with a damp cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or solvents. The hard wax oil finish can be resealed if the surface begins to look dull; contact the artist before applying any product to confirm compatibility. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which may fade the finish over time.
Seat cushions (marine vinyl): wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed; dry thoroughly. Marine vinyl is durable but can be damaged by sharp objects and prolonged UV exposure. Do not use solvent-based cleaners.
Environment: the cedar frame responds to significant changes in humidity; maintain stable conditions and avoid placement near heating and cooling vents. Do not place the chair in a kitchen.
Rocking mechanism: the chair is structurally sound and functional. Inspect the joints periodically; if any movement or looseness is noticed, contact the artist before use continues.
